Since the October release, most of our time was spent doing customer support: discussing and prototyping custom deployments, providing general technical and usage advice, developing new support tools, doing data restructuring, onboarding users, demoing the system to potential customers, and of course discussing and implementing feature requests and usability improvements.

The 2022 October release of Horizon Planner brings several major features and usability improvements, including expiring capability email generation, easier activity creation, chart improvements, and support for uploading multiple files together. The application also underwent huge technical changes under the hood.

We addressed some explicit customer requests regarding data way in the past or spread across multiple organizations, steadily improving user experience. As Horizon Planner is being used in production for more than three months now, the daily life of the development team is getting back to normal. This month we were able to focus entirely on new features, so expect a long list of improvements. Main highlights are a new Dashboard view, CO2 calculation for helicopters, and an assignment summary editor.

Release Notes - 2022. 06. 01.
In May, the focus of the whole Horizon Planner team was entirely on one thing: improving our charts’ performance as much as technically possible. We’re happy to say that the result of this effort significantly outperforms even our best-case expectations, and we even had some time to top off this release with a couple of new features as well.

Chart Improvements
The charts powering the most important views of Horizon Planner just made a huge performance leap. We are proud of this achievement and decided to share a lot of the technical details on exactly what and how we changed to make it possible.

Release Notes - 2022. 05. 03.
We had three major targets for the 2022 May release of Horizon Planner: significantly extending our CO2 emission calculation and optimization features, adding various usability features that our users requested, and reviewing time zone handling throughout the application and fixing any bugs to make sure all time-related components of Horizon Planner work correctly from Kiritimati to Honolulu.

In the last couple of months, as we were taking our final steps towards going live with Horizon Planner, development was driven by customer feedback even more so than usual. As a result, this release brings a couple of large, customer-requested features as well as a lot of usability improvements and polish.

Horizon Planner is LIVE! We have reached an important milestone in having Horizon Planner used in production to solve the planning challenges of a company managing thousands of projects, employees and contractors.

Today’s release brings some major features and a lot of quality-of-life improvements to Horizon Planner. The capability management system of the application became more powerful with the addition of capability levels; improvements to our reporting system enable specialized reports for our customers; user login got easier with single sign-on; and much more.

The weeks since the October release have been calmer than usual in terms of feature requests and support workload, so – in addition to implementing a couple of smaller features – we have finally had time to work on various non user-facing issues and do some high-level project and feature planning for 2022.

Release Notes - 2021. 09. 02.
The past six weeks have largely been holiday season for our team, taking a rest before our final push to get Horizon Planner ready for public release - currently scheduled for the beginning of October. At work, we split our efforts between two major topics: i) finalizing application infrastructure and deployment, and ii) writing technical documents and completing our administrative tasks. In our remaining time, we worked on new features, UI improvements, and bug fixes. Read on for the details.

Release Notes - 2021. 07. 14.
This release takes the usability of Horizon Planner to the next level by making it very easy to set up a new project - complete with Roles, Assignments, and as you will soon see, Mobilizations. There are also a handful of new features still focusing on closing the feature gap between legacy Horizon Planner and this software.

During the last weeks, we countinued to focus our efforts on closing the feature-gap between legacy Horizon Planner and the new, web-based one, while also delivering usability and infrastructure improvements that bring us closer to our goal of reaching production readiness towards the end of 2021.
New user-facing features include a cloud file storage, the inclusion of capability groups into the planning process, workflow improvements through dialog upgrades, and much more.

Tip: Managing Courses
Legacy Horizon Planner did not provide a convenient and structured way to manage for example course attendance or equipment maintenance: users typically had to resort to using marked “holidays” for these purposes. The fundamental design changes we’ve made at the very beginning of the project fix these shortcomings. In this post we will briefly describe a possible setup for managing such tasks better.
